CHICKENS: We have raised around 200 chickens on pasture for the past few summers. After experimenting with different breeds, we have decided on a Cornish cross which, in our experience, is the most efficient bird when it comes to both grain and pasture. This year we are raising three hundred birds and they will be ready starting mid-July. The price per pound will be $3.50; the birds average 5 lbs. Please contact us with any questions or orders.
PORK: Pigs were one of the first animals we had on the farm, not only because of our intense interest in bacon, but also because of the companionship they offer. Every spring we go to various farms and have a meet and greet with a bunch of 6 week old piglets. Their moms rarely get up to introduce themselves, but somehow we get a good sense of whether or not the piglets are meant for The Poor Farm Farm. After that, we bring them back and put them right out on pasture where they begin searching for all the good stuff that lies underneath the grass. Due to their aggressive tilling ability, we usually put the pigs on land where we expect to plant a garden or replant the pasture with better grasses. The pigs will be in our freezer and ready for yours by the beginning of November, so get your order in fast because we sell out or eat it all pretty quickly. The pork is $4 lb and $5 lb for smoked bacon and ham. Email us with any questions or orders at poorfarmfarm@gmail.com
BEEF: We are still building our herd with cows that are a mix of angus (meat breed) and holstein (milking). They are raised on our ever-improving grass (thanks to the chickens) and hay, which is from a farm down the road. We have all kinds of cuts, from ground beef to tenderloin, and the prices vary depending on the quantity one buys and the cut. Email us at poorfarmfarm@gmail.com and we will send you a list of cuts and prices.
